Gout

Overview

Deposition of monosodium urate monohydrate crystals in joints and/or surrounding tissues

Associated with hyperuricemia

Usually starts at one joint – can increase

Can have increased urate production or decreased uric acid excretion (90% of cases) – or a combination of both.

Symptoms

Crystals can further damage joint leading to secondary OA

Risks
  • Mostly male dominated
  • Peak for women is post-menopausal
  • Alcoholism, leukemia, cancer, diabetes, renal failure, obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, CVD, kidney disease
Treatment
  • Early stage: NSAIDs
  • Late stage, chronic: chronic can include long term medications
  • Diet, nutritional education, weight loss
