4 Great Tips For Your Winter Running Regimen
You’ve probably heard the term ‘orthotics’ before, in fact, if you have flat feet or an abnormal gait, you’ve probably spent a decent amount of time and money looking for the ultimate orthotic inserts. While some people roll the dice and buy standardized orthotics off the shelf at the drug store, this may do more harm than good. The truth is, every single human being has a foot shape and a style of walking as unique as their own personality. Thus, if your arch needs special support or your gait is abnormal and you’re pronating all over the place, the only thing that’s going to truly fix the issue is orthotics custom-made for your feet in combination with the right shoe for maximum comfort and mobility. At Feet First Clinic in Toronto, our friendly team of foot care specialists is here to walk you through the full process of gait analysis, shoe selection and orthotic customization.
It Starts with a Consult
When you come in for your consult, we will be able to identify the issue with your feet. Because we cannot properly assess the issue based on a phone conversation, our foot care specialists always need to perform an initial consultation to have a look at your feet and your gait to discover whether there is one acute problem or a confluence of issues.
State of the Art 3D Gait Analysis
When it comes time to actually build the custom orthotics, we don’t mess around. Our 3D cameras provide in depth information about your gait that will help us create the best orthotic and help you change your not-so-great walking habits. The truth is that most people have abnormal gait issues that they simply never address. By nipping the issue in the bud, you’ll achieve a more comfortable existence than most other folks out there!
In the Meantime (Interim Solutions)
We will then need to schedule a follow up fitting appointment – should you be prescribed and casted for custom-made orthotics – to ensure the inserts were made correctly and fit into your shoes comfortably. In the meantime, however, we will provide a short-term solution to mitigate your pain and discomfort. Typically, these solutions involve taping the foot, wearing a brace and performing certain stretches. Taping can be especially helpful for plantar fasciitis – one of the most common issues we see – and stretching promotes motion in the joints, keeping your muscles strong and flexible. Wearing a compression foot sleeve that is sleek enough to fit into all footwear and wearing a Strassburg night sock while you sleep helps keep the foot stable in one position and gently stretches it, thereby reducing pain.
Choosing your Shoe and Beyond
Here at the clinic, we sell the best brands of shoes known to humankind, no joke! Our wide selection reflects the wide variety of foot types out there. When the day finally comes to receive your custom cut orthotics, we’ll help you choose a shoe (if needed) and the chiropodist will pop those suckers in there. If you need to come back to have the orthotics modified, no problem – there’s no extra charge for any adjustments. With issues of the feet, sometimes it can take awhile for everything to break in properly, so fret not if it’s a bit of a process.
Remember: we can help with diabetic foot care issues, gait analysis and customized compression sock fittings. If it’s foot related, Feet First Clinic should be your go-to. Check back soon for more posts on the blog!
